"In the Penal Colony" ("In der Strafkolonie") (also translated as "In the Penal Settlement") is a short story by Franz Kafka written in German in October 1914, revised in November 1918, and first published in October 1919. The story is set in an unnamed penal colony. Internal clues and the setting on an island suggest Octave Mirbeau's The Torture Garden as an influence. As in some of Kafka's other writings, the narrator in this story seems detached from, or perhaps numbed by, events that one would normally expect to be registered with horror. In the Penal Colony describes the last use of an elaborate torture and execution device that carves the sentence of the condemned prisoner on his skin before letting him die, all in the course of twelve hours. As the plot unfolds, the reader learns more and more about the machine, including its origin and original justification. -Wikipedia

An amazing piece of literature. Kafka catches the cold hearted cruelty of the officer, the subservience of the soldier, the fear of the convicted man and the sympathy of the traveler without being sentimental, with a surprising but logical ending.Product details

This book was odd yet captivating. I suppose numerous meanings could be overlaid onto the upfront story.
Interesting. Typical. Always makes you think. Would like to read annotated version. Always good to see what the academics think. Enjoyed it
Another crazy book by Kafka, always great at describing absurd situations in the most casual way. Excellent book (more of a short story)
Excellent purchase. The book is brand new and the different between the real price and yours is significant! Thank you.
Pages do not have numbers!!!
A haunting story, full of grisly detail, and utterly Kafkaesque a condemned man awaiting the execution of his sentence unaware even of the fact that he has been condemned.
In true Kafka fashion, a mesmerizing tale of the inhumanity of authority. A quick but enjoyable read. He is a favorite.
